But he managed to finish second in his group and is going to play against his teammate Cooller in the playoffs. fragster sat down with the Swede who explained why he did not put much time into his preparations.fragster: Hi Magnus, you are going to play against Cooller tomorrow. Probably the worst case scenario? (Editor's note: The interview was done yesterday.)Magnus 'fox' Olsson: Yeah, two out of three players would have been good and I got the third one, which was not so good.
How do you prepare for that match against your teammate? Are you going to watch his demos?fox: I brought a laptop which can't handle Quake, so I can't watch anything. I think that I won't do anything special. I know his style, what he does and which maps he likes.
You reached the playoffs, but before the event you said that you might get raped and lose to noctis. In both cases you were wrong. Are you getting better from game to game here in Cologne?fox: I don't think so. noctis played below his level and that's one of the reasons why I was able to beat him, but I'm definitely satisfied. I was not excepting it, I was like 70 percent sure that I get knocked out in the groupstage.
Were you surprised when you saw the groups?fox: Well, I always get the hardest group, so I expected it a bit.
Does that make you lose motivation in playing Quake?fox: No, they drew the groups so late. I hadn't played anything until then. I barely touched the game since DreamHack.
fox playing in cologneWhy? What's going on in the life of fox?
fox: I had four weeks where I had to be somewhere else and do something else, so that I was not able to play. I kind of came out of the routine. If you get into a routine you just jump in, play a few games every day without thinking. I got out of that and found a new game, Heroes of Newerth, which is extremely funny, so I spent all my freetime with that game. I played like 300 games and one of them takes around 40 minutes, so that took a lot of time.
Do you think that you would have performed better today if you'd have put that time into Quake Live?
fox: Yeah, better, but it's not a big difference. I'm playing Quake since ten years now, so I won't learn anything revolutionary. Perhaps I would have a more stable level. Practise only helps you to get more stable, not how far you can get on a high level if you have a good game I think.
But you are known to be unstable when it comes to important matches. Don't you think you should practise to win the important matches and a tournament again?
fox: I think that I improve much more with watching demos of other players or myself, which I don't really do right now.
fox after his victory over noctisAre you still motivated to play Quake and the tournaments?
fox: The tournaments are fun, but I don't feel the pressure to train a lot before them. I really enjoy travelling and go to the tournaments, because we are all a big group of friends that meet every now and then. I don't want to give up the tournament life, but I don't feel like playing Quake when I am at home. I can still force myself to do, but it's not like that I wake up one day and say: "Hmhmhm, today it feels like I'm going to play the whole day, it's all fun."
If you loose against Cooller tomorrow you are going to face Av3k or k1llsen. Both beatable?
fox: Sure, Cooller is the hardest one.
Would you be disappointed if you miss the top six?
fox: Yeah, that would be pretty bad. I would propably prepare better for the Global Finals, if I get there.
A promise?
fox: We will see, they should lower the shaft damage.
What can we expect when you beat Cooller?
fox: A smile? A small smile, it won't be a big one.
Thank you for the interview.
