So he explained, why QL wasn't his game at the beginning, what motivated him again to play the game and why he is spending most of his time to watch demos.fragster: You are now in the final and qualified for the Global Finals in Germany. Are you a bit relieved that you made it?Zhibo 'Jibo' Fan: Heh, it was kinda predictable. Anyway, I'm happy with this.
After the Global Challenge Dubai you didn't seem to be that motivated to play Quake. What was wrong and what has changed since then?
Jibo and Fenda in TaipeiJibo: After the ESWC2008 final I didn't have the motivation to play Quake. When I tried QL for the first time I realized, that this isn't my game. Quake Live had a lot of problems: the game physic changed, weapons were unbalanced, server problems and so on. I went to Dubai only because of the sunshine (smiles).
The main catalysts were Carmac and the ESL organization. I really like what they do for the Quake community. I want to be a part of this new format of events and streams to keep this atmosphere. And with the last released patch, QL is a lot better now. That's why I'm here.
You weren't motivated since the ESWC Final 2008. Why did you play at the DreamHack Winter event in this year, where you became 4th?
Jibo: To be unmotivated shouldn´t be put on a level with staying at home (smiles).
The preparation for the IEM Asian Championship started pretty late for you. What were the reasons for that?
Jibo: My real life can't give me enough time to do it earlier. I flew to Shanghai directly after my business trip to Beijing. I should thank the team World Elite and Maodou for providing practice base. I had only the days before my flight to Taipei, so I treasured every minute of practice and now I'm shocked by myself, how fast I get back into shape.
I heard you've spent a lot of time watching demos from other IEM Finals participants before your semifinal match. Did you find out anything special?
Jibo: I started watching demos since my first practice day. I didn´t know anything about 1on1 in QL, so I needed to learn up from the lowest level. I even watched some demos two or three times, from both POV. After this, I started to collect puzzles for my tactic in this game.
The special is: Demos are like a book, aim is like a labs – combine them and you will own.
How it came, that you didn´t know anything about 1on1? You played that mode on a top level in Quake 3 and – to be honest – I would say, that those two games are pretty alike. At least the basics are the same. Could you explain us, what you had or still have to learn about?
Jibo: It were pure luck and TDM aim skill, that have brought me to that level. But until the last patch, QL and Q3 have at least big differences. We also weren't able to play with 30-40 ping, but only with 80 on european servers. The basics are almost the same in all games – now, I need to improve my movement and aim stability.
How does watching demos instead of playing on your own helps you?
Jibo: Because of my gaps in knowledge of Quake Live tactics and a 70-90 ping in Korea, I didn't play a lot. First I needed to know, how to play correctly and then just practice this elements in the game.
Your teammates from 4Kings just managed to beat LLL in a three map thriller and are going to face fnatic in the Grand Final of the EMS. Are you disappointed, that you can't help them out?
Jibo wins the IEM
Asian Championship.Jibo: Nice, I think our Polish brothers finally put their hands. I´m very disappointed, that I can't play in the final versus fnatic, but, there´s no problem – I hope in future we will have some LAN TDM events without this "santabarbara" league style – I hate this style.
Did the national Russian team already made any decisions about participating in the ESL ENC?
Jibo: Yes, we will participate, but my attendance as a player is still to query, but if I will be able to fix my russian passport problem before May, I will play.
I heard that the Asus tournaments in Russia are going to feature Quake Live instead of Quake 3. A good move?
Jibo: It's a necessary move for any event organizer.
What is your opinion about the ESWC comeback?
Jibo: My favorite event!
